The Hogwarts Greenhouses
On the North side of the castle sits the elaborate set of Hogwarts Greenhouses, with serpentine dragon statues running along the peaked roofs. Seven total, used for basic to advanced Herbology studies and supplying the kitchens as well as the Hospital Wing. There are many exotic and magical plants, including some that are rare and some that are difficult to grow and maintain. The more dangerous plants are kept separate from the students, for both the plants' safety and that of the students.
When you enter one of the Hogwarts Greenhouses, the humidity was thick and the smell of earth permeated the air. Rows of raised garden beds lined the outside perimeter of the room, as well as two rows down the center. Terracotta pots, in varying sizes, were stored under the raised beds. Large storage cupboards in the back of the room were filled with garden tools, watering cans, fertilizer, plant food, aprons, buckets and gloves.
Each greenhouse was used for a variety of different plants. As the year began, the students would use Greenhouse #1, filled with easy to care for plants. None were dangerous, all generally easy to keep alive. Running down the wall was a massive tree with protruding limbs and vines that stretched through into #2. Greenhouse #2, used towards the winter months, went up a level in difficulty. These plants were more temperamental, took more care and maintenance, while still being safe to handle. In the beginning of spring, they would transfer to Greenhouse #3. Here, students would find the more dangerous varieties like Mandrakes and Devil’s Snare.
