The Hogwarts Greenhouses

On the North side of the castle sits the elaborate set of Hogwarts Greenhouses, with serpentine dragon statues running along the peaked roofs. Seven total, used for basic to advanced Herbology studies and supplying the kitchens as well as the Hospital Wing. There are many exotic and magical plants, including some that are rare and some that are difficult to grow and maintain. The more dangerous plants are kept separate from the students, for both the plants' safety and that of the students.

When you enter one of the Hogwarts Greenhouses, the humidity was thick and the smell of earth permeated the air. Rows of raised garden beds lined the outside perimeter of the room, as well as two rows down the center. Terracotta pots, in varying sizes, were stored under the raised beds. Large storage cupboards in the back of the room were filled with garden tools, watering cans, fertilizer, plant food, aprons, buckets and gloves.

Each greenhouse was used for a variety of different plants. As the year began, the students would use Greenhouse #1, filled with easy to care for plants. None were dangerous, all generally easy to keep alive. Running down the wall was a massive tree with protruding limbs and vines that stretched through into #2. Greenhouse #2, used towards the winter months, went up a level in difficulty. These plants were more temperamental, took more care and maintenance, while still being safe to handle. In the beginning of spring, they would transfer to Greenhouse #3. Here, students would find the more dangerous varieties like Mandrakes and Devil’s Snare.

Greenhouse #5: Restricted Access (3rd year and up)

As you walk into the Restricted Greenhouse you will immediately notice it's not like the others. Up front there is a section for bags and personal effects. Cubbies with Personal Protective Equipment including: masks, dragon scale gloves (hand and elbow length), protective long sleeve button-up shirts, protective pants, thick rubber boots, head coverings, protective glasses, etc. It is not required to wear everything in every section, you wear what is required for the plants you are working with.

The plants are not in neatly lined up rows. Instead, they are partitioned off into sections. There is a section in front with cold storage for the food required to feed the carnivorous plants: beef, chicken, venison, eggs, lamb, etc.

The plants are separated into the following sections:

Poisonous Plants: Ingested The least lethal for the students to work with were the ingested variety, since all were hopefully smart enough to not eat anything in the building.
Poisonous Plants: Inhaled
(housed in a locked room)
The inhaled category was off limits to all but the approved adults with personal protective equipment.
Poisonous Plants: Direct Contact Direct contact, specifically plant to skin. Students are able to handle these plants if the proper clothing and gloves are being worn.
Venomous Plants
(bites are venomous to humans)
Venomous are off limits to students; adults only.
Carnivorous Plants
(meat-eaters - yes, that includes humans)
Carnivorous were open to all students who wish to feed them their varied diets.
Aggressive Plants Aggressive are limited to those with training.
