Rion Milton
#1
The cream-colored parchment of his Hogwarts supply list felt slick against Rion’s palm, the ink slightly blurred where his thumb had pressed with a white-knuckled grip. Around him, Diagon Alley’s magical thoroughfare was a frantic and dizzying gale. The pinstripe suits and velvet cloche hats of the urban world was a sharp contrast to the faded wool and salt-crust of Minster. To Rion, the crowd felt like a rising tide, one he wasn't yet sure he could swim against. His heart hammered against his ribs oscillating between the cold dread of the unknown and the excitement for what lies next.

He navigated the throng with a clumsy earnestness, nearly tripping over a stack of self-shuffling cauldrons before his eyes snagged on the sign he needed: ‘Elder & Ash’. He ducked inside, the heavy door cutting off the street’s roar with a satisfying thud.

The silence of the shop was a sudden, cool relief, like stepping into a sea cave away from the mid-day sun. He let out a long, shaky breath, feeling his shoulders finally drop from their defensive hunch. The shop was narrow and cavernous, its walls disappearing behind thousands of slender boxes that climbed toward a ceiling lost in velvet shadows. It smelled of dust and wood polish. Rion found himself in a peaceful state.

Rion stepped further in, his salt-worn boots clicking with clarity on the polished floorboards. He felt like a trespasser in a cathedral. He knew that for his mother, this place would represent a "bitter necessity", another withdrawal from the small pile of coins she had guarded so fiercely. But as he looked at the stacks, he could only feel the key to a new life.

Somewhere in the grain of a wand was the power to find the father she refused to name and the strength to build a life that wasn't echoed by the "wallowing" footsteps of her reclusive grief. He walked further into the store hoping to find an attendant.

“Good day to you! Welcome to Elder and Ash, I am Bernadette…Hmm… Or Bernie or Miss Hawthorn or Witchy McWitchface,” she titters with laughter, high and squeaky. “Don’t you fret, I will answer to just about anything… Except Clyde.” She shakes her head emphatically. “HE is a bowtruckle and can be quite persnickety, so watch your eyeballs, he likes to poke.” She nods at the young student, as if what she said was the most important piece of knowledge to take away from this conversation.

“Can I assume you are here to find your wand? Yes!? Of course! Good Good.” Not waiting for a response, Bernie comes around the counter and begins measuring the patron who just entered her shop. Lifting this arm and that, measuring each individual finger, kneeling and quickly measuring their feet, then popping back up to look deeply, and awkwardly into their eyes. “Fascinating. Did you know a quarter of the bones in your body are in your hand? No?! I didn't think so. OK! Let’s find you a wand. Pop Pop!”

Bernie ran around the shop, spitting out random nonsense facts that most people really didn’t need to know. “Did you know that your left lung is slightly smaller than your right? Did ya? Nope. Why? To make room for your heart? Awwww, so sweet.”

“Ok, let's try this one on for size.” Coming down from a ladder with multiple boxes haphazardly clutched in her arms. One attempts to jump, jump ship, but she manages to keep them all balanced.

Handing the wand over to the student, Bernie steps back a touch so that she isn’t in the line of fire.. It was rare to find a match with the first box, but it could be done. “Go on then,” she said, waving her hands about. “Give it a flick.”

I’m trying something a little different, so you have more say in the making of your wand. Below you will find the descriptions of multiple wand woods and cores that I think work well for your character. If you would like to find your wand in the first go, GREAT! Or, we can RP you trying them and it going wrong. At the end of your next post, please let me know what you want to do and what Combo you like the best for your character. If you hate them all, I can go back to the drawing board. UP TO YOU!

When you post, mention whatever wand wood and core you want to RP, whether it's YOUR wand or one your character is trying. When I post I will add the size and flexibility. HAVE FUN!! If the wand is a dud, feel free to make a mess of Bernie's shop, she isn't afraid of a small explosion.

WAND WOOD

Aspen
Wand-quality aspen wood is white and fine-grained, and highly prized by all wand-makers for its stylish resemblance to ivory and its usually outstanding charmwork. The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. In my experience, aspen wand owners are generally strong-minded and determined, more likely than most to be attracted by quests and new orders.

Red Oak
The true match for a red oak wand is possessed of unusually fast reactions, making it a perfect duelling wand. Its ideal master is light of touch, quick-witted and adaptable, and a good man or woman to have beside one in a fight.

Sycamore
The sycamore’s ideal owner is curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrates a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world's most highly-prized wand woods.

Walnut
Walnut wands are often found in the hands of magical innovators and inventors; this is a handsome wood possessed of unusual versatility and adaptability. The walnut wand will, once subjugated, perform any task its owner desires, provided that the user is of sufficient brilliance.

WAND CORE

Phoenix
This is the rarest core type. Phoenix feathers are capable of the greatest range of magic, though they may take longer than either unicorn or dragon cores to reveal this. Phoenix feather wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won.

Billywig Stingers
Billywig Stinger wands bond well to light-hearted pranksters, and are extremely capricious. At one moment it will produce the strongest Cheering Charm in the school, but at another it will object to being used as a potion stirrer and siphon up hours of work without so much as a by-your-leave.

Snidget Feather
Extremely rare due to the Snidget's protected status, the feathers of this tiny bird are useful as a core. Wands with a Snidget Feather core excel in Charms & Potions.

Bear Fur
As bears normally have a shy nature, those who get a bear fur core might find themselves avoiding contact with fellow humans and prefer to do things alone.

Kneazle Whisker
Though not very strong in any forms of magic, Kneazle wands do their best in charms, care of magical creatures and defense against the dark arts. Kneazle wands prefer owners who are very intelligent and vigilant. They are most likely introverts and have trouble trusting people, but can be excellent judges of character. These wizards are driven, persistent and independent.
