Character Name:
Galen Murray MacLean
Type of Character:
Adult
Age:
36
Date of Birth:
5 January 1885
Blood Status:
Pureblood
Residence:
Oxford, England
Family:
Colonel Duncan MacLean (b. 1856), Father
He is retired from the military now, but works as a tactical advisor. He raised his children as if they were his cadets with early mornings, perfectly polished appearance, and strict rules. He does not show emotion, which is why Galen doesn’t. Duncan is where most of his personality comes from.
Moira MacLean (née Kerr; b. 1858), Mother
She came from a modest but deeply magical family. She is grounded, quietly strong, and warm. She is the opposite of Duncan, but she never contradicted him directly. She is the glue of the family. Galen respects her but does not confide in her, but she is perceptive and sees more than he knows.
Alastair MacLean (b. 1881), Brother
He is charismatic, and rose quickly in the military because of it. He is considered the “golden son”, something that has always bothered Galen though he won’t say anything about that. He is married with two kids.
Euan MacLean (b. 1883), Brother
He did not join the military, much to their father’s disappointment. Instead, he is a healer who specializes in magical trauma and spell damage. He is more like Moira, in that he is thoughtful and good at reading people. He is work obsessed and is not married.
Isla MacLean (b. 1888), Sister
She is the peace-keeper of the family. She works in educational outreach programs. She is social, warm, and diplomatic. She tries to get Galen to relax, and believes that he is lonely.
Catriona MacLean (b. 1888), Sister
She is the only sibling that he would begrudgingly admit is smarter than him. She has a sharp-tongue, is blunt, and a little terrifying. She is in Magical law enforcement and is incredibly competitive. They fight, but they trust each other immensely. She is closest to Galen.
Occupation:
Professor of Magical Anthropology at the University of Oxford
Personality & History
Personality:
Galen is extremely prideful and disciplined. He refuses to be emotional, or be too thoughtful. He knows what needs to be done, and does not deviate from that. He refuses to admit to any loneliness he might be feeling, constantly lying to himself that he is happy. He has pushed himself to excel in academics because his oldest brother was always ‘the favorite’. And because he has never been the best at the ‘thing that mattered the most’ to his father, he channels that frustration into his academics. He is efficient, and does not tolerate bullshit.
History:
From the moment that he was born, Galen knew what his path in life would be. For generations, the men in his family had been very passionate about serving their country in the military and he knew he would do the same.
But let’s start from the beginning, shall we? The MacLean clan, native to Scotland, were Pureblooded and had always broken the stereotypical mold of what that meant. They did not have mansions, or castles, or a ton of money. What they had was earned through extremely hard work and dedication. This was a quality instilled in every generation, and something they were proud of.
Galen was smack-dab in between younger twin sisters, and two older brothers. Due to this, he had never been particularly remarkable when compared to the others. Their father raised them with very strict rules, as if each child was a soldier in some army. They weren’t, of course, and not all would end up joining the military.
But Galen would. Once he graduated from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he immediately began to attend the wildly prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy as an Officer Cadet. He studied Magical International Education and Magical Anthropology, deciding to double-major because he knew he had the ability to be at the top of his class.
When he graduated, he joined the Royal Army as a Second Lieutenant. During his time in the Army, Galen was promoted to Lieutenant. After a while, he was asked to return to Sandhurst as a Professor in Anthropology, where he stayed until World War I broke out in the summer of 1914. Once the war began, Galen served on the front lines as a Captain.
Once the Allies won the war in November of 1919, Galen decided to take another teaching job, this time at the University of Oxford.
Prompt Response:
“Excuse you?” Galen asked as he looked down at the pathetic man who was staring at him with an angry look on his face. The man had just told him that he saw him steal something from the table of new editions of classical stories, the kind that he studied in University many years ago.
Galen, who had worked hard to get to where he was and was proud of himself in every aspect, and was always sure to carry himself as such… was shocked. But his face did not show shock. Why should it? Shock would show that he was not in control of his emotions, but he was.
He always was.
Galen raised his right eyebrow, considering the man who had, he supposed, expected him to immediately confess and hand over whatever book it was that he had supposedly taken. Because he hadn’t reacted how the man expected, though, the man began to look nervous.
He repeated his accusation, although his voice was much less confident this time, which did nothing to impress Galen. He had been trained at a young age by his father to always be confident, never second-guess yourself. Now, he imagined, the man was considering what he thought he had seen.
“You really should work on your delivery,” Galen responded, an almost amused look on his face in the form of a smirk. “Instead, you let your voice shake which tells me that you are not sure of what you think you saw. And, Sir, I can tell you that I did not take anything.”
The man, now blushing from humiliation, nodded and apologized. Galen tipped his hat to the man, and turned to leave the shop, his stolen copy of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde safely hidden out of sight of the man who had accused him.
