Personality & History
Personality:
Harper has always been focused, driven and determined to achieve more and more, ever since her first days at Hogwarts, born out of necessity to please her parents and catch up to her siblings' accomplishments. The harrowing desire to beat them one day, the deeply rooted wish for recognition and praise.
Her career is everything to her, eager to climb the ladder as high as she can with little regard for others. She is independent, confident, a workaholic. There isn't much room for free time or hobbies but she isn't interested in those anyway. Her job is her hobby, her passion and her purpose. No achievement is ever truly enough, only fuel to get her to the next thing and prove to herself and her family that she is just as worthy and successful as them.
To outsiders she appears cool, stern and rigid. Not much fun to be around and that is precisely why she's never had any real friends, at least not for long. Her priorities had been clear from a very young age and everything else simply came second.
Harper is determined to make a name for herself, has already sacrificed all of her life for this one and only thing and she's not stopping now. Not even her mother's continued disapproval for remaining unmarried and childless -- after all she'd already achieved, meaningless suddenly -- would stop her anymore.
She had a goal and she had long ago sunk her teeth into it.
They'd soon be proud of her.
History:
Harper was raised by parents that always expected the best and more from their children. Him -- a successful high-end lawyer, her -- editor of one of the most popular magical women's magazines: leaders of renowned, reputable businesses built through hard work and leaving little time for love or affection towards their children. Instead, Harper and her siblings grew to compete for their parents' admiration, pride and approval on an almost daily basis making them opponents rather than family.
Born as the youngest of three though, Harper soon learned that she would always be the one with the most expectations weighing on her shoulders, ones she'd be unlikely to ever meet to full satisfaction.
It had all been done before after all. First by her eldest brother and then by her older sister.
There was always something to critique, her accomplishments nothing new. Top of class, prefect, headgirl. All she could ever do was meet what was considered as the bare minimum, match her siblings' achievements -- something that didn't elicit praise anymore. It was expected at that point.
Leaving her with no time for friends or much else besides studying and loading her schedule with extracurricular work. And in the beginning it was lonely and isolating. Her only friendships either quickly breaking apart or staying shallow and meaningless.
But Harper quickly pushed past this desire to be as carefree as the others and replaced it with hard work, just like her parents had done and that had made them successful and wealthy.
Sorted into Slytherin, she channelled her ruthless determination, cunning confidence and ambitious resilience, pushing past her peers in every regard, straight to the top.
After finishing school, Harper went on to university to study politics, a field neither of her siblings had claimed and finally something she could shine through just by herself. Make a name and prove to her family just how capable and deserving of their recognition she really was.
Four years of more studies and learning and being the best in everything she did, and Harper graduated -- once again -- as top of class at the age of 21.
From there, her path took her from the bottom of the Ministry, further towards the top over the course of a decade.
Too long in her father's opinion. A husband and children long overdue in her mother's opinion.
But Harper had long forgone her parents' opinion and criticisms. She had other plans now.
Prompt Response:
She had gotten the invite for the job interview only earlier this morning, delivered via interdepartmental memo and right to her office where she had been working for several hours already at that point.
Only a brief flicker of a triumphant smile had appeared on her face, only a subtle glimmer of accomplishment in her eyes before Harper had folded the piece of paper and then stored it in the top drawer of her desk. Returning to the work at hand, finishing the pile of papers with her usual cold focus and undeterred attention.
Years and years of this exact determined way of working was the reason why she had made it this far and why she was finally getting her chance of getting close to the very top.
Nothing came after that.
This invite was why she had left work at a normal, reasonable time for once. Diagon Alley's shops simply didn't stay open past a certain hour and she needed to get herself a new, appropriately tailored blouse and skirt to present herself properly. Maybe get that extra boost of confidence as well.
Looking good never hurt.
The appointment had been quick and easy enough. A few Galleons extra worked wonders in moving around time schedules and soon Harper was out the door of the small but esteemed shop, ready to head back to the office.
"Hey, you! Stop right now!"
Harper came to a halt, half-turning to look back and finding the tiny, stocky cashier running after her like a maniac. Face reddened and out of breath when he finally caught up with her.
Her brows rose questioningly.
"I saw it!", the man panted. "You stole a pair of gloves! Hand over that bag right now!"
Harper regarded him for second longer before turning to fully face this ridiculous person. "Do you think I look like someone that needs to steal something as pathetic as a pair of gloves?", she asked evenly and with a face as unimpressed as it could get.
But she handed over her bag nonetheless. She needed to get back to work and this unnecessary interaction was stealing her time. "Go ahead," she encouraged. "And please hurry, I have more important matters to handle than you could ever dream to be."
