Pods of Peril: Hospital Wing Volunteer One-Shot
#1
Tuesday, 3 May 1921
8:00am

The morning had been rather ordinary when taking into account everything that had transpired in March; the Hospital Wing was running smoothly now and it seemed – so Rose thought – that everything that Thayer and the Runes professor had done to mess around with magic in the castle was finally back to a normal state. What a damn relief, too.

That is… until…

“Henry, just breathe, I assure you that you will be fine…” came a woman’s voice. Rose could hear someone on the verge of panicking. She stood and rushed to go see what was going on.

That was when she saw Thessaly Briar, the Herbology professor, accompanying a student. The boy was looking in horror at his hands, which were covered in full, red blisters that looked as if they were ready to pop at any moment. He was hyperventilating and whimpering.

“What on Earth happened?” Rose asked as she led the boy to one of the patient beds.

“Well, it seems as if someone has tampered with some of the plants in the greenhouse. He touched a plant that even I don’t recognize, and after getting some resin of some sort on his hands and arms, this happened shortly after.”

Rose looked at the boy’s face, and then called the volunteers over that were in the Wing.

“I tried to identify what the plant is, however it doesn’t look like any of mine. I don’t know how it got there, or even what it is. Miss Nordstrom is attempting to figure it out.”

“Hmm… okay,” Rose said as one of the blisters finally filled enough to cause it to burst.

She handed the boy a towel to hold on the pustule that had popped while she briefed everyone.

Rose moved the volunteers out of earshot of the boy while she informed them of what was going on. “It looks as if there is an unknown plant in the greenhouse that has caused blisters all over Henry’s hands and arms. We will need everyone’s help for this; Matilda is already in the greenhouse, so feel free to join her. We must find a cure for this, and we must also treat the symptoms.”

Rose looked at the small group of student volunteers.

“Please be sure to exercise caution as we do not know if the blisters, or the pus, is contagious. Keep the Wing clean to prevent spread. Please, try to be thorough so that we can try to help Henry out and prevent any more injuries.”

OOC: Hello and welcome to the Hospital Wing one shot! This is not required to pass, however will help if you are lacking in threads.

There will be three different focus areas for this, so just do whichever one you feel more confident about.

Greenhouse Attendants
Nurses
Apothecaries

As this is a one-shot, you only have to post once to pass this thread (minimum of 4 paragraphs with 4 sentences each). You don’t have to collaborate with others in your focus areas, but feel free to if you like.

This thread will be locked for grading on 21 November. Be sure your tracker is fully updated by then.

He enjoyed early morning shifts in the hospital wing. Usually very little happened overnight making them rather routine. A good time to ask questions on the various charts on patients if any of them interested him. In the usual case where none of the cases interested him he often could sit in the lounge reading a book after doing a few things to help about.

This morning was mostly a reading a book morning until he heard Professor Byrne ask what had happened.

He overheard the sound of whimpering and someone hyperventilating. Sounds that weren’t rare in a medical setting but the fact the professor had to ask had him curious so he put down the book he was reading and wandered over. He resisted chuckling as the boy called Tilly with her last name like she was some sort of adult. Then he saw a blister burst and instinctually stepped back away from the scene.

No curiosity was worth the risk of catching anything from a blister.

He listened to Professor Byrne as he took a few more steps back trying to be as far as possible from Henry the blistery boy. He tilted his head giving Professor Byrne a bit of a look of disbelief as he said “ Professor. To be safe I assume we should follow Spattergroit protocols? “ Hopefully, his caution would give his classmates a clue. Hopefully, his classmates were properly afraid of getting Spattergroit to understand just how cautious they should be.

“If you mean wearing protective gear and exercising extreme caution? Yes” - Professor Byrne

The understatement in Professor Byrne’s words shocked him enough to not speak further on the subject as he just said in response “ Thank you Professor. “ He didn’t mean the thank you, as he was shocked that it wasn’t a more clear yes alongside directions for his classmates. He’d be spending the next week hiding in the library if this escaped the Hospital Wing. Instinctually he took another step back but hit the wall on the other side of the room.

He moved to the side finding the nearest door to one of the back rooms with the protective equipment and suited up. He fully put on protective gear as he found it. Then when he didn’t find enough gear to truly cover him protectively he tore apart one of the plastic gowns and used tape to wrap it on any gap of space. Yes, he even used tape and torn pieces of the extra plastic gown he grabbed to cover between his protective goggles and the main gown he was wearing. A protectiveness that only lasted a few seconds as he realized he encased his face and couldn’t breathe and had to make breathing holes on the side.

He then grabbed the first bit of supplies for the patient which was cool towels that he moistened slightly. A bucket that had soap in it with wash clothes he placed at the sides and a plastic trash bag to toss anything once used into.

He carried over his supplies to Henry.

He said “ You’ll have to wash your blisteriness. Don’t rub. Just dab the soapy clothes first. The water is cool so it should be soothing. Once you use something toss it in this trash bag. “ Then he put the soapy tub of water and the wash cloths next to Henry on the bed for him to take care of himself. The trash bag was set up attached between the bed and a side table so Henry could easily toss wash cloths into it.

There was no way he was touching Henry.

Then he said “ For the parts that aren’t exposed I can wrap you in cooling towels as fever is common. “ With a nod from Henry he wrapped the back of the Henry with a large cooling towel.

Then he went and fetched a plain bucket of water and more wash clothes and said " Use the second bucket and extra towels to rinse. "

He stood back and observed Henry as while he wanted to help he couldn’t think of anything more. Or anything more that he could do that wouldn’t put him at risk. If this got bad Professor Byrne would just send Henry to St. Mungos much like what happened at the small hospital like facility his mother worked in at home in Belfast. This wasn’t worth risking himself.

OOC: Permission granted to say Professor Byrne said the line indicated above.

Everything about this wreaked of Thayer and the bullshit he pulled earlier in the term. The halting stairs, magic mess ups in the hospital wing, the kitchens. He had caused so many issues, it was hard to tell what was him and what was actually an issue.

When Henry’s hands broke out in painful blisters, Tilly knew something wasn’t right. While the plants they were working with were dangerous, none would cause a reaction like the one he was currently being treated in the wing for. As soon as Professor Briar left with Henry, Tilly got to work.

Walking over to the storage cupboard, Tilly found and put on all her personal protective equipment: Goggles, gloves, a leather apron, mask and a thick canvas coat. Was it overkill, probably, but she also didn’t want to be stuck in the hospital wing with blisters and burns. She hated wearing gloves while working with the plants, favoring the feel of the soil passing through her fingers. The dirt caked on her skin and under her nails. Unfortunately in this situation, gloves were a must.

Tilly knew where Henry had been working, so she went on the hunt for what plant would have caused the issue. Walking down the aisles, everything looked fine. Nothing caught her attention until she passed a Snargaluff. Or was it? Tilly kept her distance and looked closely. At first glance she wouldn’t think anything was wrong, but there was a large pustule that had recently popped, a green slime oozing from the spot. It was the sticky green resin that was off. This wasn’t normal for a Snargaluff, but it was indicative of a Venomous Tentacula.

“What the hell?” Tilly said to herself in a hushed whisper. Getting closer, making sure to keep her hands to herself, she looked carefully through her goggles at the tree stump looking plant. There were subtle differences, the way the bark had veins of green coloring, more like the Venomous Tentacula than the Snargaluff.

“Hey! Over here!” She called another student working on the case. “Look, I think I’ve found it. Do you see these pustules? The Snargaluff doesn’t usually have these, and the ones that do have don’t have skin burning sap inside.” Sure of her discovery, Tilly collected a glass vile, shears, and a small metal skewer used to anchor twine to hold up spindly plants. Using the metal instrument, she collected some of the sap and deposited it into the bottle. It took some time, but she was able to collect a few teaspoons of the substance. Then, she took a few cuttings of the leaves and roots, storing them in a leather pouch.

“Ok, I’m going to take these up to the hospital wing immediately. Grab some twine and make a perimeter around the plant, around four feet on all sides, so that no one gets near it. I will be back soon with more information.”

Running off to the hospital wing, Tilly arrived with the sap and leaves, hoping that it would help Healer Byrne come up with a cure.

“I think I found the plant. It looks like a mix of a Snargaluff and a Venomous Tentacula. Here is a sample of the sap and the leaves. I hope this helps.”
