Personality & History

Personality:
Roger is a sharp man with little patience for fluff. From birth, he was raised to make money quickly and not suffer fools lightly. On the outside, he presents himself with composure, priding himself on his breeding and decorum.

He is not a loud man, thinking volume follows men who otherwise have no way of maintaining order. He is a precise man who likes to have things go his way and has never taken being challenged well. Roger has a sharp eye for business, and his tactics can at times seem cutthroat, but it comes from an understanding of business--when to invest, when to let go, what might be dead in the water, and what is worth pursuing.

He is not a cruel man, but has no issue with cruelty as utility. Everything must serve a purpose, and every move he makes is borne from a desire for an expected end.

Roger is not one to be swayed by emotions, only principle and good reason. He expects his family and those under him to fall in line and doesn't tolerate deviations from his carefully curated reality.

History:
Roger was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. The firstborn of two children, he was raised among the aristocrats of Long Island, his family rubbing elbows with families of like origin and deep roots.

From a young age, he was raised to know the heritage of his family and the importance of maintaining it. His whims, while indulged, were never put ahead of what was needed for the betterment of the family. He was socialised early, attended many functions with his father, and learned his place very quickly. Rather than being sent off to Ilvermorny, his parents chose to have him and his younger sister, Isabel, homeschooled at their estate.

He was betrothed to his wife, Francine, at the age of 18 and married her at the age of 23. The couple lost their first child, a stillbirth, within the first year of their marriage. The couple took the loss on the chin, not seeming to flinch. A year later, they welcomed their first child, a daughter they named Lucy.

On one of his many business trips to England, he met a flighty young woman with a smile that looked like sunshine and a mother who never liked him. Roger had no real interest in her outside of the good time she could provide, but he filled her with lies of love and stability. He took her to nice places, enjoyed her company, then cut her loose the moment she turned up pregnant. He broke off all contact with her and made it clear she wasn’t to contact him either.

Life went on for him after that, and years later, the couple welcomed their son, Roger Jr.

His family stepped down from the head of the business when he turned 38, handing over the reins and the estate before he and his mother returned to continue a quieter life in their Florida estate. His father maintains a place on the board, and the pair run their many businesses together, but the final decisions now rest at Roger’s feet.

One such decision was the security of his legacy. In a stroke of misfortune so profound as to be nearly impossible, both Roger’s legitimate children turned out to be squibs. While this did not tarnish their status as purebloods, it did make it impossible for them to inherit because of the deep magic that governs the estate and many of their business contracts. It forced him to go on a search for the child of the woman he’d spurned, Ruth Elliot. He set private investigators to the task and is preparing to make her his legitimate heir.

Prompt Response:
"Stop!"

Roger heard the shout but paid it no mind. He was not the sort of man to be barked at, and certainly not the one to be commanded. Never, not even in the farthest recesses of his mind, did he imagine the frantic shout of the shop assistant could be directed at him. Why should it be? He had already concluded his brief business at the Hollow Ledger, his purchase tucked neatly inside his coat.

"Stop! H-Hey, you! Stop!"

The door swung open before him, inviting him to take his leave. Whatever issue the assistant had with whatever customer was beyond his scope, background noise against the backdrop of his day.

He would head to Gringotts next. There were a few things he needed sorted out with the vault his family owned there. A few trifles, transactions he didn't mind handling himself while he was already in the area, and one more matter that he would rather see dealt with himself.

In a flash, the assistant dashed out before him, both hands stuck out on either side.

The young man struggled to meet his hard gaze, his eyes constantly sinking to Roger's shoes, no matter how hard he struggled to maintain his gaze. Roger held no such hangups. Dark eyes narrowed nearly imperceptibly as they locked onto the terrified young man before him.

"Y-You have to pay before you leave. You--you can't just walk out of here without…without…”

A nervous boy. New.

"I’m inclined to forgive the insult this time. Step aside, boy.” Roger replied, the corner of his lips curling slightly with the derision he felt for such an accusation.

"Sir, I can’t, that book—"

"This one?” he asked patiently, tugging the book loose and holding it out for him to see. The receipt was tucked behind the cover, the shop’s seal peeping out at them.

The assistant went pale. His mouth opened and closed several times, the boy gaping as he tried to find the words that might absolve him of this grave social faux pas. He stammered his apology, stepping aside as he began to shrink under Roger’s level gaze.

"Unnecessary,” he said as the fourth apology fell through stuttering lips. "I’d like to speak with the owner." His gaze darkened. "Fetch him for me.”
