Personality & History
Personality:
Tanner has spent most of his life in the shadow of others, he was brought being told to keep his head down, stay out of the lime light, be content with what you've got. But Tanner has never been content with any of this. He always wanted more, bigger and better things. He has learnt the hard way the only way to get things is to stand on others to get them. His life affirmation is "Any way I can".
He can be sneaky and sly, if you are a friend he'll keep you around just in case he needs you. He doesn't trust easily, he listens and watches carefully and as a result knows more than he often should.
History:
Tanner grew up in a fairly normal middle class English household, his mother was a housewife and his father a teacher. His father was well aware of what his mother was and what he would grow up to be. From an early age he was taught by his parents to hide what he was, to keep a low profile. To go unnoticed, not to make a scene or let slip to the muggles what he was.
Things changed little when he attended Hogwarts, sorted in to glorious house of Slytherin, he didn't have the family name, the money or the blood to make him more than a minor footnote in the history of Slytherin house. His school life was unremarkable, but he learned important skills that would eventually pay his way. He became adept at spells that allowed him to gather information and hide away from prying eyes. He learnt it never hurt to have more information on someone than they had on you.
He graduated Hogwarts in 1907 and went back to Manchester to a life of obscurity. After two years apprenticing in a magical bookshop he left Manchester for the bright lights of London. He tried his hand at various jobs before becoming a clerk for the Daily Prophet in 1912. He was unremarkable in his job, he always wanted more but was never quite able to get it, his face didn't fit, he didn't have the right connections.
In 1914 WW1 broke out and Tanner saw this as an opportunity, not for glory in war but to get promotion in his job as others left to fight. However this didn't go to plan for Tanner as he was conscripted into the Army in 1915 and spent the next few years using all his skill to avoid getting killed and front line action.
When he returned from war he went back to his old life, slowly he gained traction in his job, with experience and a black book of secrets promotion happened slowly. He went from a lowly clerk to a full reporter.
Tanner is now in his early 30's with a decent career, he loves to get the scoop on stories and is more than happy to show his editors bias, or the bias of whoever controls the purse strings. The downside is he has spent so long honing his career that he has no social life outside of work. He lives alone in a modest flat with only an owl and house plants for company.
Prompt Response:
London one of the finest cities in the world unless you had to traverse it during the morning rush. The owl had arrived early but Tanner had not been ready for it. He'd been asleep, he'd been on a late one last night at some club, gaining gossip on some high up ministry employee or another. Of course that came with a fair amount of drinking. So the owl was not welcome this morning carrying-on with it's inane hooting.
The letter it brought didn't help his mood or hangover. It seemed his boss Mr Blackswan wanted an early morning meeting. It was bloody typical that old goat only ever wanted morning meetings, but that was because he swanned off to the nearest bar in the afternoon. Tanner had dragged himself out of bed, threw on his second best suit and then headed to the fireplace only to find the bloody flue network was out of order. That meant he had to get across London on Muggle transport. He glance at his watch he would be lucky to make it at this rate.
He flew out of the door to his flat, down onto the street and onto the Underground, he rummaged in his coat pocket for his coat pocket for his Underground map, opening his new little book with the blue boarder and tracing his finger across the underground lines. Growing up in the Muggle world was sometimes useful when the flue network decided to not work. He would take the line to the city and a tram to the Prophet offices. He might just make it, assuming Muggle transport was more reliable than wizarding.
