Julia Laurence
About the Professor
Professor Julia Laurence will be teaching Potions this term, alongside her roles as Ravenclaw Head of House and Hogwarts Librarian. She is most often found where knowledge is being made, kept, or quietly defended; at a lecture bench, in Ravenclaw Tower, or among the stacks of Restricted Section books.
Born into an old pureblood family, Julia was raised in a world where a name carries expectation and composure is considered a form of manners. That background shows in her presence - polished, controlled, and difficult to unsettle. She does not waste words or gestures. When she is warm, it is intentional. When she is stern, it is unmistakable. Students quickly learn that her calm is not softness, it is confidence.
Her academic career is as formidable as her reputation. She studied History of Magic at the University of Edinburgh, then held curator positions with The Vatican, The Louvre, and most recently The British Museum. That experience shapes her teaching style. Professor Laurence values strong foundations, close reading, and the ability to trace a spell or a method back to its purpose and provenance. In Potions, she emphasizes precision and responsibility - not out of fear, but out of respect for the power students are learning to handle.
In the classroom, she is not theatrical, but she is compelling. Her expectations are high, her feedback is direct, and she has little patience for carelessness, particularly when it risks harm. At the same time, she is an unusually supportive mentor for those who show genuine curiosity and effort. She believes students deserve the truth about what they are learning, and she is known for meeting thoughtful questions with thoughtful answers.
Professor Laurence’s door is rarely closed. Students seeking guidance or additional support are welcome to visit her in Ravenclaw Tower or the library, where she encourages ambition so long as it is paired with discernment.
