Personality & History
Personality:
Rose has always been the perfect blend of Taurean stubbornness, Hufflepuff loyalty, and Irish rage. While her mum was alive, the girl was always as sweet as she could be. She loved her mum more than anything, so when she was taken away from her, her heart grew a bit cold. She became stand-offish, unafraid to speak her mind. In school, she was the same way. She was always the first to stand up for her friends, and would have a go at anyone who dared talk down to them. She wasn’t afraid to talk back to her professors and found herself in detention more than once. As an adult, Rose is more in control of her emotions, though she can still be a bit volatile.
History:
Born on a spring day in Kilkenny, Ireland, Roisin was an only child. She always had the best of everything, including her mother’s attention. Her relationship with her father was alright back then, though as she grew older he grew more distant. And then accidental magic happened, and her father – as muggle as possible – immediately labeled her and her mum fools. It was then that Rose realized her mum had hid her heritage from the man she married, and when Rose asked why, she explained that there were people out there who didn’t understand magic.
Confused, Rose began learning as much as she could about where her mum came from. She wasn’t allowed to leave the house much, except for the exquisite balls that her father would drag them to. Rose was homeschooled for much of her life. Until she wasn’t.
Roisin had been out walking around the grounds, checking on some roses she had helped her mum plant, when she heard a scream. She ran to the house to find her mum lying at the bottom of the garden stairs, her father glaring down at them.
The young redhead knew he was to blame, and Rose shouted every possible curse word she knew in his direction. Her mum died, and her world shattered. Locked in her room, that’s how dad liked her. Unless they had to go to a special engagement, Rose essentially did not exist to Darren Byrne.
One morning, a new voice in the hall woke her from her slumber. When the girl peeked into the hallway, she saw a woman she did not recognize speaking to her father, touching… Then the woman turned, and Rose’s blue eyes widened in horror. She was pregnant.
Rose shut the door and cried, trying to figure out what to do about this situation. Her father had been stepping out on her mum. She couldn’t understand that as even before the woman died, she considered her mum an angel.
She bit her tongue around them, the woman named Prunella who was now her step-mother. Evil? Yes. Just like the storybooks.
Soon after her baby brother Callum joined them, Rose couldn’t take it anymore. She stormed out of her room, throwing accusation after accusation at not just her father but the woman too. Her brother, an infant, began screaming and crying from the commotion.
It was soon after that incident that Darren shipped her off to London. Finn was his name; her mother’s cousin. He worked at the Ministry in some dull-sounding job, and soon Rose was attending Hogwarts.
During her time at the magic school, Rose found a love for Defense Against the Dark Arts, which led her to join the Ministry of Magic soon after graduating. She found herself training to be an Auror, however that was put on hold long enough for her to become a mum. As soon as Fiona was able to be without Rose, however, she was back at it – throwing herself into work to keep from thinking too much about the girl’s father (a guy one year older that she had met at a party one night – a nameless man, someone she never saw again).
It took Rose three years to get through training, and as she finished up her time in a junior role, she had another baby – this one a boy. She knew who the father was this time, Maddox Barlowe, and was happy to stay in touch with him. Because of how badly she wanted to make up for her missed time at the Ministry, she let Maddox have primary custody of Evander. Fiona was old enough to be a bit more independent at this point. And then, in 1919, Roisin finally achieved her dream of becoming a fully trained Auror.
Prompt Response:
“Excuse me, ma’am?”
The redhead closed her eyes when the man spoke from behind her. She’d been careless and reckless a moment ago, realizing much too late that she had used magic in an area crowded with Muggles. Part of her had thought – however briefly and optimistically – that perhaps it was so crowded no one would have seen; but no, that was not Rose’s luck.
She closed her eyes and took a breath, trying to quickly come up with some sort of explanation for the sudden appearance of an umbrella in her grasp, protecting her from the rain that had just started. Honestly, she had no idea if she could even talk her way out of this one. She was a shitty liar, after all.
Turning around, Rose smiled, her red lips in stark contrast to her pale skin. “Yes, sir?” she asked, wondering how he might explain his question. She would just play dumb, she decided.
“D-d-did – I thought –”
His stumbling over his question was adorable and she raised her brow, waiting for him to get the full question out before she bothered speaking again.
“I mean to say, you didn’t have that umbrella a moment ago but now you do…”
Rose let her blue eyes wander up to the canopy above her head. “No… sir, I had this the entire time, I can assure you of that,” she laughed gently. Just stay level, no need to spiral, she reminded herself.
Eyes narrowed at her, and the man looked around, as if desperate for someone to corroborate what he’d seen. Or what he thought he’d seen.
“I swear to it, ma’am.”
Roisin tilted her head to the side slightly, smirking. “Perhaps you are just lacking in sleep. Now, sir, I have to be somewhere, so I must be going…” she said, and then turned, making her way in the direction she’d originally been walking.
