Hospital Wing: General Information - Ruth Elliot - 12-08-2025 The Hospital Wing General Information ![]() ✾ The Wing
Located on the first floor of the castle, the hospital wing takes care of staff and students alike. The common cold, broken bones, or a sudden bout of anxiety before that test you failed to study for, the wing is equipped to handle a wide array of ailments. All but the most severe injuries and illnesses can be accommodated, and patients are overseen by a St. Mungo's trained member of staff on loan throughout the period of their specified, and renewable contract. This is a new initiative to alleviate the trouble Hogwarts has faced in replacing its long-standing nurse following the troubles with its former Headmaster, Nicholas Holloway. Healer Josephine Graham has picked up the mantle, transferring over from the paediatric ward of the hospital. Impressed by the records kept and the report received on the willing and diligent volunteers who stepped up in the former nurse's sudden absence, Graham has decided to allow the volunteers to continue offering their aid. Seeing the opportunity to foster not only interest but skill, Healer Graham has worked to standardise this volunteerism into a program that can better prepare any hoping for a rewarding career in healing at St. Mungo's. With the approval of both the headmaster and the hospital's chief of staff, she set to work creating clearer distinctions in roles and expectations, ensuring more balanced shift timetables, and acquiring capable hands to help the smooth running of this new endeavour. The Hospital Wing provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical skills in not only healing but potion making and herbology, should those be more to your liking. All are welcome, and there's certainly enough work to go around. Healer Graham has chosen Slytherin, Ruth Elliot, to be her second in command, entrusting her to help in ensuring the smooth running of the wing. (The girl practically lives there anyway). ✾ The Volunteers
What started out as a few students hanging around the wing to aid the former nurse with her duties has now become a small cohort of dedicated volunteers, ready to offer their time and lend a helping hand. Often affectionately called 'Angels' by Healer Graham, these students help to lighten the load, allowing the nurse to focus on the patients in need of the greatest care. The following is a general summary of each role. More comprehensive distinctions can be found here: Nurses are primarily focused on helping with matters relating to patients. Changing bed sheets, patient meals, and maintaining accurate records are only a few of the tasks given to them. Less experienced nurses may be asked to handle small injuries and mild illnesses, administering potions (only under the directive of the healer), while more experienced nurses will have the opportunity to sit in on or aid with more complex matters. Healer Graham will, from time to time, personally tutor nurses throughout their shifts, providing ample learning opportunities. Those with an adequate level of experience will often be trusted to handle patients on their own (provided the cases aren't too complex and they have proven themselves competent). These students are often assigned less experienced nurses who aid them in a manner similar to the way they aid the healer. Apothecary work in the backrooms of the wing, down a floor into a repurposed cellar of sorts. They are responsible for ensuring a fresh and ready supply of brews to meet the demands of the hospital wing. Those new to the wing will primarily be in charge of the lighter, simpler brews; those most in demand, like pepperup potion and basic pain draughts. There are many old recipe books and tomes along the shelves that the students are allowed and even encouraged to peruse in their free time, should they be interested in learning more complicated brews. With more experience, apothecaries will be trusted with the rarer potions that require rarer ingredients and more careful handling. They are also in charge of keeping records of the medicine stores, alerting the greenhouse attendants of any growing or diminishing need for certain ingredients, and ensuring nurses are aware of available stores. Greenhouse Attendants are primarily stationed within greenhouse 4, which is connected to the storage room of the wing. Students working here are in charge of tending the medicinal herb garden to ensure bountiful yields that can supply the needs of the apothecaries. Checking for blight, ensuring ample nutrition of the plants, and harvesting are but a few of the tasks left to these capable individuals. They maintain the balance of the garden and are responsible for the treatment of the herbs to ensure they are fit for use in potion making. RE: Hospital Wing: General Information - Ruth Elliot - 12-09-2025 The Hospital Wing Passing Requirements ✾ To be considered as having passed the hospital wing, you will need a minimum of 20 points. Throughout the year, there will be many opportunities for you to gain these points and enjoy your experience working on the wing. Below is a breakdown of how you can go about earning points. These will also count toward the house cup. Hospital Wing Threads - 5 points each (unlimited)
One of the easiest ways to earn, have your character complete a thread within the hospital wing, relating in some way to their duties or the ins and outs typically present in the wing. They don't need to be healing in every post, but it must be clear in some way that they are there for their shift. ✾ Thread with Rae - 10 points (one per student)
Unlike regular hospital wing threads that can be more general, these threads should be directly related to shifts, positions, guidance, or your character's role. An example of this might be trying to have their schedule changed for the next week, not thinking nursing isn't for them, and wanting to give the apothecary a shot, a concern they'd been having on the wing, or something similar. ✾ Meeting threads - 10 points
At least once per term, a meeting will be held for the volunteers of the hospital wing. It will be a time to discuss changes, report problems, rally for improvements or amenities; the list goes on. If you complete the meeting, you are free to claim this activity. ✾ Case Study/Emergency Drill - 10 points
Once per term, the healer in charge will put on either a case study or an emergency drill for the students to demonstrate their competence and display whatever skills they may have learned thus far. These tend to be very interactive and will require your character to sometimes think on their feet. Typically, these are held near the end of the term. ✾ Medical Journals - 2 points per entry (min. 250 words; unlimited)
While volunteering, students will be encouraged to keep their own medical journals. These should be considered more personal than academic and may chronicle how your student is coping with their shifts. Are they overwhelmed? Are they proud of their progress? Did they finally get to cast that one spell they've been working on for weeks? Have them journal about it. Journals should be made here, but please link them to your hospital wing time card as you would any other of your links. |
