Student Application: Nathaniel Mourningside - Nathaniel Mourningside - 10-09-2025 ![]() General Information Character Name: Nathaniel Mourningside Age: 14 / 15 on 23 Sept Date of Birth: 23 September 1905 Blood Status: Halfblood Residence: Windriver Mountains, Wyoming Family: Nathaniel has no family of his own. His mother Virginia was a muggle who died during childbirth, the result of complications arising from a magical pregnancy. His father was killed in the line of duty serving as an Auror. Roufas Bourne is his Godfather, and is Nathaniel's guardian. Personality & House Preference Personality: Nathaniel is cocky, bordering on arrogant. He is good-natured, but has a quick temper. He is eager to show off, and he likes to be the center of attention. He is a consummate class clown, loving a good joke and a great prank even more. Nathaniel is loyal to his friends, driven to succeed and be the best at everything. He is highly competitive, and has a bit of a ruthless streak, though he always adheres to a code of honor. Within those bounds, however, he will do anything to win. Nathaniel is a good student, clever and always eager to absorb new knowledge. Nathaniel is not one to take things too seriously, and does his best to be a student and a kid that makes Roufas proud, but also is just unable to help himself when it comes to the business of having a good time, and as such is sometimes predisposed to leaping before looking which lands him in his fair share of trouble. Nathaniel doesn't have much regard for authority. He breaks the rules, not out of a lack of respect, but rather because he isn't very well likely to follow a rule he doesn't understand or see the value in. He has ethics, and his own sense of morality, but he doesn't give much regard to the opinions of others, and does not like to be told what he can and cannot do. His competitiveness isn't born out of a desire to win, but more so to prove to himself that he can do the things that he sets out to do, that and nothing more. It should be noted that Nate is a consummate and shameless flirt. Deep down, he is very much a romantic who craves whirlwind romance, complete with all the trappings and trimmings. He enjoys romance a bit too much perhaps, and does not always remember that real life relationships seldom mirror those in his books. This can lead Nate's relationships to have a degree of complexity a boy his age seldom is prepared to navigate. History: Nathaniel Mourningside is the ward of Roufas Bourne. He came into the latter's care when his father James was killed in the line of duty serving as an Auror when Nathaniel was 11. James was Roufas' best friend, and made Roufas his son's Godfather. Nathaniel's mother Virginia was a muggle who died during child birth due to complications from the magical pregnancy, so Nate has no memories of her. He does have many fond memories of his father however. James and Nathaniel shared their love of reading, and so Nate frequently reminisces about trips with his father to obscure book sellers in back alleys of large cities, and late night discussions and debates about the classics. Nate still enjoys a spirited debate about philosophy, ethics, and the various studies of thought. He grew up living with Roufas and his family in the Windriver Mountains of Wyoming, and was loved every bit as much as if he were a naturally born son of that family. He has learned quite a lot growing up on the dragon refuge. He gained a keen and sharp mind from his father but from Roufas, Nate learned toughness and self sufficiency. He is as at home in the wild with himself alone to rely on as he is surrounded by others. In the years that Nate spent at the Bourne family home, he became a capable outdoorsman, hunter, fisher, and forager. During his time at home, during a holiday it isn't unusual for Nate to vanish into the woods with a small pack for days at a time. Nathaniel did his first few years of school in America at Ilvermorny, joining Hogwarts in his fourth year when his Guardian, Roufas took the position of Charms Professor at the school. Nathaniel is not terribly excited to be at Hogwarts and is even less impressed with the students, thinking his new classmates to be somewhat aloof and stuffy. He does enjoy the change of scenery, preferring to keep to himself when possible. He can usually be found somewhere cozy with his nose in a good book, or stealing time away to cook or bake something new in the kitchens. House Preference: no preference...sort Nate where it feels like he belongs. Year Preference: 4th Prompt Response: Nate sat in one of his favorite spots outside the large main house on Gannet Peak, highest mountain of the Windriver range in Wyoming. He held in his hands a book, one of his favorites; "Wuthering Heights". Nate was a sucker for the gothic romance, the dark and brooding atmosphere of it all, and then there was the darkness of it. Nate enjoyed tales of vengeance, and the generational tale of one man's revenge against not one but two families made for a wonderful read, perfect for losint himself in as the last rays of the days sun broke across the peaks of the mountains in brilliant hues of pink, purple, red, orange and gold. It was a warm day, and a soft breeze whistled through the mountain tops. Nate was lost in a good book, surrounded by the serenity and peace of a place few would ever truly get to appreciate like this. All in all, he thought, it was a perfect day. His perfect days would soon be coming to an end, though. The end of Summer brought with it a bittersweet feeling for him. Nate didn't hate school by any means. He did well, and he had friends. He had good times, and bad like anyone, but he genuinely preferred the solitude of the mountains, and the companionship of a good book. Whether he found himself in the brooding, gothic moors, twenty-thousand leagues under the sea with Captain Nemo, or hunting the infamous white whale alongside Captain Ahab, Nate could lose himself in the adventures of vengeance. He identified with characters that had been wronged and did something about it. Just then, an avian screech split the tranquility wide open. Looking up, Nate saw a huge tawny owl soaring across the valley. The great bird banked toward him, swooping low and dropped a letter neatly into his hands, a letter bearing a large wax seal emblazoned with a prominent "H" and carrying the crest of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It came as little surprise to him that he would be receiving a Hogwarts letter. Roufas was taking a position there as a professor, and had expressed some interest in spending more time with Nate now that he no longer had the duties of an Auror keeping him from home. Tearing the parchment open and reading, Nate took it all in, sighing deeply. He already wasn't looking forward to going back to his own school, but it looked like he would also be going back to school half a world away, leaving behind his friends and the life he had there. If nothing else, he thought, he would at least have Roufas. Miscellaneous Other Characters Roufas Bourne How did you find us?
