Prefects

Overview

A prefect is a student that has been entrusted with extra responsibility, autonomy and authority by the Hogwarts staff. Each year, at the Opening Feast, the Headmaster/Headmistress announces two students from each house to act as Prefects for the term. Typically these students consist of one boy and one girl, although on occasion two boys or two girls have been chosen in the absence of another appropriate choice.

Prefects are chosen in their fourth year (or later years, if a position becomes available), and they hold these titles until graduation, unless somehow revoked by the Hogwarts staff.

Ordinarily, Prefects are tasked with being good role-models for their younger counter-parts, offering assistance with tutoring, acclimation to school, advice, and often times just being a good sounding board. They are able to dole out light punishments to rule-breakers such as detentions, and often take on late-night patrols to help out the professors.
