Love is for the WEAK :: Morgan - Matilda Nordstrom - 02-14-2026

14 February 1922
6:30pm

Stupid, cupid, love, snogging, dating, relationship, valentines day bull shit.

UGH!

If there was any day of the year Tilly hated most it was Valentines day. Sure, when she had a boyfriend it was freaking magical. Single? NOT SO MUCH!

It seemed that with all the other library assistants being “busy” on this most holy of all holidays, Tilly and Morgan were relegated to the shift. Great. Awesome. They had been at it for an hour already and Tilly had kicked out two separate couples snogging in the stacks.

Nope, NOT ON HER WATCH!

“Can you believe that Lorianne and Jonathan made up. Just in time for valentines day. Not surprise there, she just wanted someone to snog. He needs to learn a new technique, his kissing abilities looked sloppy at best.”

Tilly said, while sorting the stack of books to return. There was a theme, that made her blue eyes roll. “That’s the third book I’ve found today that has love potion pages dog eared. We should let the hospital wing know, I expect an influx of vomiting boys. The crop of potion experts is severely lacking this term.”

Just then a giggling girl and a blushing boy walked into the library, Tilly, in all her spicy ginger glory glared at the couple and in a very un-library-like voice sternly said, “NOPE! Get out, go snog somewhere else. Out, NOW!” Pointing her hand at the door. They were smart, they left. Probably Ravenclaws.

The 14th of February was constantly one of Morgan’s least favorite days of the year. Sure, it was Blobby’s birthday – he was a whole three years old now – but it had also been her mother’s birthday. It was some sort of horrible irony that they shared the day, considering she was not his mother.

To top it all off, her stomach had been in knots all day. While her father and Julia still were not flaunting their relationship, just the knowledge of them probably spending time together later was… enough to make her nauseous.

Not to mention all of the stupid snogging going around. And she thought the library would be a safe haven. Clearly the girl who had never been in a relationship – and not really even kissed, save for the non-kiss from her… ew… brother – was unaware of why anyone would choose the library to participate in snogging sessions.

“Can you believe that Lorianne and Jonathan made up. Just in time for valentines day. No surprise there, she just wanted someone to snog. He needs to learn a new technique, his kissing abilities looked sloppy at best.”

Snogging techniques… gross. Morgan didn’t want to think about that. At all. Ever. She shuddered at the thought, picking up the stack of books her fellow Gryffindor had sorted. What even was there to have technique about?

“That’s the third book I’ve found today that has love potion pages dog eared. We should let the hospital wing know, I expect an influx of vomiting boys. The crop of potion experts is severely lacking this term.”

Morgan then looked over at the door to the library where a giggling girl and blushing boy had come in, holding hands.

”NOPE! Get out, go snog somewhere else. Out, NOW!”

She set the stack of books back down on the counter. Nope, she would put them away later. ”Tilly,” she began, looking at her friend with her brows narrowed. ”Is there actually supposed to be a technique?”

“Tilly,” Morgan said, bringing Tilly’s attention to her friend. ”Is there actually supposed to be a technique?”

[blink blink blink]

Well fuck. She knew Morgan had been snogged by Benji, but that wasn’t an actual kiss. It was a point being made. It never dawned on Tilly that she hadn’t been kissed since. And apparently she had questions.

“Ummm, I mean.”

Her thoughts went to the snogs… the MANY snogs Tilly had shared over the years. Some were part of student dares or games. Others were with actual boyfriends. There had been two: Evander and Ren. Thinking back, her first couple snogs were a bit sloppy, hurried… there was teeth knocking together, she grimaced with the memory.

“Well, I wouldn’t say a technique, but there is some learning involved. It takes practice. Everyone is different, and sometimes people just don’t mesh.” She said, moving her hands back and forth as if to mimic the action.

Tilly kept looking through the books that needed to be reshelved, finding two more that dealt with potions. A bookmark highlighting a love potion in one and a poison in the other. Interesting. Someone has been scorned.

“So, When it comes down to it. If you have a boyfriend that you have real chemistry with, the snogging just sort of falls into place. Does that make sense?”

Morgan thought her question was fine, totally normal. Until Tilly blinked at her. She felt her cheeks grow warm with blush and bit her lip. That was apparently something she was supposed to know. Her redheaded friend knew a lot more than she did about this stuff. Everyone did, it seemed.

She thought back to Benji’s pathetic kiss and felt herself get a bit angry again. Not just at the fact that it happened, but also at the fact that he hadn’t even kissed her properly. If he had, then perhaps she wouldn’t feel quite so clueless.

But also, he was her brother now.

Brilliant.

“Well, I wouldn’t say a technique, but there is some learning involved. It takes practice. Everyone is different, and sometimes people just don’t mesh.”

Morgan nodded slightly, looking back down at the books that she needed to put away. Perhaps she should do that, and end this really awkward conversation.

“So, when it comes down to it. If you have a boyfriend that you have real chemistry with, the snogging just sort of falls into place. Does that make sense?”

She nodded again, her brows still furrowed. After how much she had liked Benji, and how horrible that ended (though he really was a great friend), she didn’t know if she knew what the older girl was talking about.

Morgan hadn’t really paid much mind to boys since then.

”And so…” she began, opening up one of the books that had been earmarked on a love potion. She pointed at it, then looked back at Tilly. ”So this… this wouldn’t really create chemistry, right?” she asked, more curious than anything.

She was beginning to understand that what came naturally to some could feel like disruption to someone else.

The books were piling up. They had half a cart of just books that belonged in the love potions section. Some were actual potions, but nothing that would get the results the girls in the castle were after. Most were of the holistic variety, combining herbs and flowers to get someone to fall. Some books just mentioned the use or how to make an antidote. A few other books were of the more romantic nature. The girls of Hogwarts were in for a rude awakening. Romance was not a common personality trait for the teen boys in the magic school.

“Lets get these back to the shelves, then we can work on more of the pile at the desk. This is going to take some time to reorganize."

Walking through the stacks, the girls got to the first section where a large section of books was missing. “Wow, we only have a handful, there are a lot of books missing. This is going to take forever.”

”So this… this wouldn’t really create chemistry, right?”

Turning to look, Tilly saw Morgan flipping through a book on love potions, another one that wouldn’t actually make someone fall in love. But maybe a bit of temporary infatuation.

Tilly shook her head and looked at the page that was earmarked. “Nope, this might help manufacture some fake feelings. Like, when butterflies flutter in your belly, or your heart rate increases. Maybe a blush and then some warm fuzzies, but it won’t fake chemistry or actual love. It just hijacks your body into feeling something it actually doesn’t. All these potions will only manufacture surface level feelings. None that we have the ability to read will actually create love.”

Grabbing a step stool, Tilly moved the books around into order then started putting the books from the cart back in to the shelves. "Using a love potion sounds all fine and good, but they don't last and the feelings aren't real. So, once it wears off, the person who took the potion will lose those feelings and be completely blindsided. Not a good way to start a relationship."

Morgan watched Tilly continue to shelf books, listening as the older girl spoke. She hadn’t felt anything for anyone since before Benji kissed her. It’s like that kiss just completely turned her away from romance altogether. And as far as she knew, no one was crushing on her.

She frowned, thinking. One day, she knew, she’d probably end up with someone. But what would that look like? She wanted to be a dragonologist like her dad; she loved dragons. She could see herself being happy by herself on a dragon preserve.

Had she ever felt any of that? Even with Benji? No. She just felt fiercely loyal to him when she first started at Hogwarts. She’d never felt the need to blush. She was proud of that, if she were honest, as it didn’t seem pleasant at all.

"Using a love potion sounds all fine and good, but they don't last and the feelings aren't real. So, once it wears off, the person who took the potion will lose those feelings and be completely blindsided. Not a good way to start a relationship."

”So it… yeah, that doesn’t sound good at all. Imagine falling head over heels for someone just to find out it was manufactured by that person,” Morgan responded, scrunching her nose at the thought.

”No one better do that to me, or I’m gonna hit them with something worse than a bag of rocks,” she added dryly, referring to the big fight in the courtyard her first year. Her dad had been pissed, but she’d been proud; she had knocked out a sixth year.

She slid another book into place on the bare shelf.

”Why would anyone want something fake? If it’s real, then it should just… be real. Not forced. Not tricked.”

Another book slid into place.

“If someone has to brew it then they know it wouldn’t happen on its own,” she smirked and shrugged.
