Sorting Hat - Gideon Blackwood - 12-31-2025

Sorting Hat

1 September 1921

Walking down the steps to the front door, Gideon felt a strong feeling of deja vu. Had it only been a year since the last time he opened the doors to the new students of Hogwarts? His first term had been packed full of challenges, making the term feel decades long. While, in actuality, it was only ten months.

The sound of his black leather loafers echoed through the stairwell. The halls, still silent, the calm before the storm. Standing in front of the closed front doors, Gideon adjusted his tie, buttoned his suit jacket, running his hands down the front to smooth out any wrinkles. It was typical for Witches and Wizards to wear robes, he was in the minority group of wizarding fashion.

Checking his ornate pocket watch, the clock tower chimed at the exact moment his ears picked up the chatter of childish voices outside the door. With a steading breath and a prayer to the gods for a better year, Gideon opened the doors with a flourish, making it all the more dramatic as the wind blew in from outside.

The weather was atrocious. Gale force winds and pelting rain soaked the students from head to toe. As the students hustled inside, a quick wave of his wand caused the water and chill to disappear in a rush of steam that rose to the stone ceiling. The audible sighs from the children made it obvious they were much more comfortable.

“Good evening, and welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. First years, you will stay with me. Older students, you know the drill. Make your way to the Great Hall, find your seats, we will join you momentarily."

As the older students bounded up the stone staircase, laughter, chatter, yells and excitement went with them. Gideon was left with a silent group of, mostly, terrified looking first years. Damn they were small. It was hard to believe they were eleven, most looking no more than eight or nine. He could see Fiona in this group a few years from now… Annnnnnd, he needed to not think about that at all. She was too small, no where near old enough to be a first year.

He would need to talk to Rose about this.

“Follow me please.”

His words were short and to the point. Long legs taking him up the stairs quickly, the shorter students taking two steps for every one of his. Stopping in front of the doors leading to the Great Hall, Gideon turned and surveyed the students in front of him. So many wide eyes and nervous faces.

“Beyond these doors you will find the Great Hall. When we enter, you will follow me to the front where you will be sorted into your house. Your house is your home away from home for the next seven years. When your name is called, you will come to the front and sit on the stool, where I will then place the sorting hat on your head. Once the decision of your house has been made, you will go join your house for the rest of the opening feast. Any questions? No? Great. Lets get this show on the road then.”

Gideon didn’t acknowledge the hands that went up, they had better things to do and the process of the sort was self explanatory. If they couldn’t follow along with the process, at least it would be obvious that Ravenclaw was out.

Opening the doors to the Great Hall, Gideon walked at the front of the group of firsties. The loud chatter that greeted him quieted to a whisper as the group assembled in front of the staff table. The room went silent as the folds of the ancient hat parted and began to sing.

Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!

The applause and cheers went wild around the Great Hall, only lowering when Gideon held his hand up and called out the first name written on his parchment,

“Amy Anderson!”

“Westley Zakarius!”

With the last name called and the student sorted in to his own house of Slytherin, Gideon rolled up the parchment, picked up the hat and stool and walked off silently to the room just behind the staff table. Once everything was secure, he took up his place at the staff table and waited for the feast to begin. Sitting with Ruby on one side and his Fiance Roisin on the other. Finding Rose’s hand under the table, he laced his fingers with hers and sighed. Finally able to relax and enjoy the feast.

Welcome first years! You will come in, alphabetical order, and sit on a stool where the Sorting Hat will decide your fate.

Feel free to post this experience!

You do *not* need to follow any specific order, and this is considered a one-shot. Your student will post, then immediately go join their table.

Good luck!
