Out Past Midnight (Patrol) || Open - Alice Ravenstone - 11-16-2025

25 May 1921
Past midnight

Alice made another lap around the quad, her wand shining bright with lumos – one of the only spells she knew she could successfully cast. She’d lost track of time, again. She’d stopped and took a break to study for her Dark Arts final before getting back up and continuing on her patrol.

Yes, it was thirty minutes after patrols were over. Yes, she was supposed to be back in her dorm. But Alice didn’t have a good sense of time at all, and didn’t realize it was that late already. Time was a funny thing anyways. Especially ever since the carnival.

Watching her sister deteriorate before her eyes was something that both made the term feel fast and slow at the same time. Fast because Alice didn’t get to spend as much time with Everleigh during the healing process as she knew she needed. Slow because she was so damn tired.

Ever since Easter break when they were both back home, hearing Ever wake up screaming in the middle of the night every night had driven Alice to not sleeping much. Her grades were slipping. Her commitments were slipping. And her outlook had gone from sunny to overcast. That was the only way she could explain it; like a storm was coming and she had no idea when it would hit so she couldn’t properly prepare.

RE: Out Past Midnight (Patrol) || Open - Oilibhéar Ó Coigligh - 11-16-2025

The full moon had past a few days ago. With today by his calculations the first day it was safe to be out after dark. Something he needed to do as drawing star charts from the top of the astronomy tower was just extra hard. It was much easier to lay in the grass by the lake to draw ones star charts.

A thought he had hours ago which had lead him to do just that. The only problem was once the star chart was drawn it was so quiet. A quietness that resulted in him falling asleep on his blanket he brought out. A nap that was interrupted by the air getting chillier waking him up.

Naturally as he was already outside and it was hours later based on observing the stars he drew himself another chart. It was only when he pulled out his pocket watch he realized it was after midnight. He debated if he should just try to stay outside. Less odds of getting caught.

Then he shivered slightly and collected his things. He tossed his blanket over his shoulder and put everything else in his backpack.

As he walked in he was surprised to see a light in the quad. Curiosity, especially after recent events had him draw his wand as he walked towards the quad.

Reaching the quad he tried to hide behind something as he saw Alice out about much later than she should have been, even for a curfew. He debated ducking and running, but after everything the last thing he wanted to do was scare Alice. He didn't care if he got a detention for being a good person and not scaring one of the more easily scared girls at Hogwarts.

Steping into the light he said “ It’s just me Bear. “ Then he held his wand in the air as he continued “ Coming in a bit late after working on my star chart for Astronomy. “

Movement at the edge of the Quad stilled the fourth year. She stopped walking and sucked in a breath. The light was still on her wand, but it was as if she thought that no movement would make her invisible to whoever or whatever was approaching.

A moment later, a familiar redhead stepped into the light. Alice released the breath she’d been holding.

“It’s just me Bear. Coming in a bit late after working on my star chart for Astronomy.”

Despite how she’d been feeling, a soft smile slid its way across her lips. She relaxed and nodded slightly. “I thought an Astronomy star chart would be best made in the Astronomy tower,” she commented. Then she motioned to her bag. “I was studying for finals…” she sighed and looked up at the sky.

“What time is it?” Alice asked, figuring she still had an entire hour left. Then again, when time was moving either too quickly or too slowly, it was hard to keep track of which one it was at any given moment.

Bear was in Ravenclaw, just like Ever was. She was tempted to ask him to sneak her into the common room so she could check on her sister, but… Well. Would it hurt? Benji’s mum was the Head of House over there now, and she liked her. Well… she could just get information from him first and then cross that other bridge if it came to it. Perhaps it wouldn’t.

Then again, did she really want to know if he could hear her sister screaming in the middle of the night? If he did, it would just make her more upset and worried than she already was. If he didn’t though… then maybe that would help. She bit her lip.

His brain paused at Alice’s mention that an Astronomy chart would be best done in the Astronomy tower. He’d tried that naturally over the years but it was an unnecessary difficulty in his mind. Though Alice had said that she was studying for finals to which he could just nod.

Mostly, as he had more finals than he’d realized and was expected to do more than just show up to them. Yes, another older year had a chat with him reminding him of that just earlier in the day. Not that it made him care much more than to focus on the star chart he did.

“What time is it?”

This was the part where he admitted to the fact he was clearly out after curfew. As there was no way that he, Bear, would ever be imprecise with time. In fact for such an important question he looked up to the clocktower. Then he dismissed it as he couldn’t see it fully and only would trust it if it matched at least three pocket watches. He only had two with him.

He took out his two pocket watches and checked both and said “ It is twelve after twelve. “

Then he continued “ The astronomy tower is good for singular observations” as his thoughts caught back up to him. Then he paused and said “ Well singular observations not blocked by the roof. “ Then he smiled as he continued “ For making charts however it is better to be not he lawns as long as one doesn’t have to draw things near the horizon then I recommend getting a broom and flying to sit on the roof of the castle. “

As he wasn’t a fan of reckless things such as getting on brooms and flying to the roof of the castle his chart didn’t care about the horizon. He also didn’t care much about his Astronomy grade, though astronomical patterns were often used in clocks so he cared about his charts.

He said “ We observe the stars from a sphere which is earth with us mostly staying on a single line as it goes around. There’s alot similar to how the rotation works for astronomy as there is for gears of clocks. Likely due to astronomical influences on the first clocks. “

He stopped himself from babbling.

The boy took out two pocket watches, which made Alice smirk a bit. He loved clocks and honestly, she didn’t mind them either. Sure, the ticking could get loud, but lately it was something that helped keep her thoughts from wandering too far away from her. There was something soothing about the reliability of the ticking rhythm. Perhaps she should spend some time in the clock tower.

Her eyes drifted towards it, as she considered that. She’d have to do that before leaving for the summer.

“It is twelve after twelve.”

Alice’s brown eyes widened a bit as she hadn’t even realized it was even past her patrol time, not to mention past midnight. She listened as he spoke about Astronomy, and all she could think about at that moment was that the Astronomy professor, Professor Thayer, was the one who had destroyed her sister. She’d loved the stars as much as anyone else; they were beautiful. But now…

Bear kept speaking but the Hufflepuff was hardly listening at this point. Her thoughts were now back on Everleigh. She bit her lip slightly, the time totally forgotten now.

“...Likely due to astronomical influences on the first clocks.”

Alice’s eyes landed on his face when she realized he had stopped speaking. “Hey, um…” The subject change may be a bit abrupt. “Does Everleigh stay in the common room at all?” she asked, thinking that was the safest question. She didn’t want to know if he heard her cry or scream in the middle of the night. That’d just hurt.

RE: Out Past Midnight (Patrol) || Open - Oilibhéar Ó Coigligh - 11-17-2025

The question Alice asked wasn’t the one he expected when he paused talking about clocks. Though it was rare that anyone responded like he expected on the subject. The excitement for clocks just didn’t exist at Hogwarts. He’d have to add comparing clocks to astronomy charts and the circular nature of them to the list of comparisons that didn’t work.

Considering the question perhaps clocks wasn’t enough of a distraction from Alice’s thoughts. Thoughts that while he’d witnessed the events. He’d heard the screams and sat in the dark of the great hall. He’d watched the theatrics of their former professor following their former headmaster into names remembered for ill will towards Hogwarts.

He paused and thought unsure what to say.

The answer was obvious. The answer was he rarely saw her now when before she seemed to sit and read like the rest of his housemates. He even remembered a certain awkwardness with Cassian in the library that remembering back to it had an innocence he hadn’t seen from the girl since.

A since that his talking to much hadn’t helped Alice. Not that he had any idea how to do otherwise as his talking had made him feel a bit less worried about the situation they had been in. A situation that was over for him, but he knew still lingered daily for others like Everleigh.

He said “ I don’t see her much. “ The reality was he didn’t even think she was in the common room much, but didn’t want to say that. He continued “ It’s exam season. She’s a second year so she’s probably trying to avoid my housemates that are taking it like they’re preparing for the next big quidditch game. Without quidditch they’ve gotten a bit out of practice working themselves up for things so are taking it overboard. “

He should have likely just stopped with the first bit.

RE: Out Past Midnight (Patrol) || Open - Alice Ravenstone - 11-17-2025

Bear was quiet for a few beats and Alice bit her tongue, wondering if that meant that Everleigh really was doing as bad as she thought she was. She frowned, her thoughts beginning to take over her attention again. But finally, he began speaking.

“I don’t see her much. It’s exam season. She’s a second year so she’s probably trying to avoid my housemates that are taking it like they’re preparing for the next big quidditch game. Without quidditch they’ve gotten a bit out of practice working themselves up for things so are taking it overboard.”

She looked at him, a mixture of expressions crossing her face. Confusion for what the hell he was even going on about because quidditch had nothing to do with her sister, but also… He hadn’t fully answered her question. She frowned, taking his non-answer as an answer. And not just that, but as an answer she hadn’t wanted.

Exams. That was something that Alice had thought about for herself, but not for her sister. Would Everleigh even pass? Was she capable of sitting for an exam? Was she destined to repeat her second year?

All of these thoughts were just upsetting the Hufflepuff even more. It seemed the longer she was outside, the worse it got.

“She’s not okay,” she responded, not really to Bear, but just in the open. Her sister was lost and there was nothing she could do to save her. Alice didn’t know what to do.

RE: Out Past Midnight (Patrol) || Open - Oilibhéar Ó Coigligh - 11-26-2025

He knew the answer he gave wasn’t the one she wanted. There was no answer he could give that she’d want. There was no miracle when it came to these things.

What had happened for Everleigh had been horrible, and traumatizing. Part of him wondered if Everleigh was even past the point of being over shock. Time likely indicated she might be over the shock. Though he didn’t know her well enough to say anything.

In fact, he didn’t know Everleigh well enough to do anything besides keep himself out of the way.

“She’s not okay,”

He nodded. Part of him was happy that Alice realized her sister wasn’t ok. That meant she cared.

He said “ She has people who care about her. Like you. “

The only comparison he could think to relate back in his experiences near this was his father’s death. He’d not been ok for a while. Furthermore, that event had changed him making him very different from how he’d been prior to it.

Something told him Everleigh was going to be different after this all. He wasn't sure he knew her well enough before that he'd be able to tell the difference. However, Alice would certainly see every little difference being her sister.

He said “ All anyone can do is try to support her or stay out of the way. An event like that changes a person so sometimes they need the space to work that all out. “
