Lindsay Thatch - Lindsay Thatch - 08-20-2025 The bell over the door jingled as Lindsay strode into Elder & Ash, her scuffed boots tapping against the old floorboards. The shop smelled of wax and polished wood, the air buzzing faintly with magic. Shelves stacked high with wand boxes loomed around her, and a polished sign above the counter proudly read: “Elder & Ash – Makers of the finest wands since 1304." and another smaller sign below, "Ask about our discounts on wand polish.” Lindsay grinned at the words, brushing a strand of golden hair from her face. Her eyes caught on a parchment scroll sitting neatly atop the counter. Bold letters at the top announced: “Wand Fitting Survey.” She leaned forward, curiosity sparking, and tugged it closer. The parchment unfurled with questions written in careful script—pick a creature, Best Subject, qualities she valued most, even whether she considered herself more daring or thoughtful. “Survey, huh? Easy enough,” she muttered, grabbing the nearby quill. With a determined grin, Lindsay bent over the scroll and began scrawling out her answers, her handwriting bold and a little messy. When she finished, she rolled the scroll back up and set it neatly on the counter, giving it one last tap as if sealing her intent. “There. Let’s see what you’ve got for me,” she said to the silent rows of boxes as she handed the survey onto the counter, ready to meet her wand. She couldn't wait to learn how to do all the things! LINK to Application: Would you like a traditional wand, or something more exotic? Welcome to Elder and Ash, I am Bernadette…Hmm… Or Bernie or Miss Hawthorn or Witchy McWitchface,” she titters with laughter, high and squeaky. “Don’t you fret, I will answer to just about anything… Except Clyde.” She shakes her head emphatically. “HE is a bowtruckle and can be quite persnickety, so watch your eyeballs, he likes to poke.” She nods at the young student, as if what she said was the most important piece of knowledge to take away from this conversation. “Can I assume you are here to find your wand? Yes!? Of course! Good Good.” Not waiting for a response, Bernie comes around the counter and begins measuring the patron who just entered her shop. Lifting this arm and that, measuring each individual finger, kneeling and quickly measuring their feet, then popping back up to look deeply, and awkwardly into their eyes. “Fascinating. Did you know a quarter of the bones in your body are in your hand? No?! I didn't think so. OK! Let’s find you a wand. Pop Pop!” Bernie ran around the shop, spitting out random nonsense facts that most people really didn’t need to know. “Did you know that your left lung is slightly smaller than your right? Did ya? Nope. Why? To make room for your heart? Awwww, so sweet.” “Ok, let's try this one on for size.” Coming down from a ladder with a long box, Bernie handed the wand over to the student. It was rare to find a match with the first box, but it could be done. “Go on then,” she said, waving her hands about. “Give it a flick.” Apple Wood, Werewolf Whisker Core, 11.5in, Sturdy Apple: Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to an owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners, who include the celebrated author of Merpeople: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Language and Customs, Dylan Marwood. Werewolf: There are several different cores that can come from a werewolf which include whiskers, hair, saliva, and nails. All of these from a werewolf have their own virtues however they all make for an exceptional wand. Werewolf cores ally themselves with made werewolves and born werewolves very well. However they do often ally themselves with a strong owner, one who has courage, bravery, and loyalty. This wand is an extremely loyal wand and will cause many difficulties for anyone who tries to take the wand from their owner. It will often backfire on someone who has stolen or won the wand, it does not cooperate well with others. Overall the werewolf cores all do well with divinations and outdoorsy elements. Sturdy < slightly less common, harder to learn and cast, slightly more power ***If you love this combo, great! If you like one piece of your wand (core, wood, flexibility, etc.) Put that at the bottom of your next post in an OOC message. I will keep that the same for the next option. Or, I can come up with an entirely new wand. UP TO YOU! RE: Lindsay Thatch - Lindsay Thatch - 08-20-2025 Lindsay couldn’t help it, she giggled the moment the woman introduced herself as Witchy McWitchface. The squeaky laughter and quick-fire nonsense facts made her shoulders shake with amusement, and every time Bernie tossed out another tidbit—about lungs, hearts, or bowtruckles—Lindsay found herself grinning wider. When the wand was finally placed in her hand, she wrapped her fingers tightly around it, her heart fluttering with excitement. She gave it a flick, then another, waiting for something, anything, to happen. But the air stayed still, save for the faint creak of the old floorboards under her boots. “Huh,” Lindsay said, holding it up to the light. She gave it another swish, a little more dramatic this time, but again, nothing. No sparks, no shimmer, no magic rush up her arm. Just silence.... She glanced up at Bernie, a sheepish grin tugging at her lips. “I mean, I like how sturdy it feels—it’s got a good weight, yeah? Feels like it could do some really cool stuff.” She gave the wand a playful twirl before handing it back. “But… something just isn’t right. Like it’s a great wand, just not my wand.” She gave another soft giggle, cheeks warm, before shrugging. “Guess the right one’s still waiting for me.” OOC: In case it wasn't clear in the RP. I really like the sturdiness factor, but let's see what you have next for her. RE: Lindsay Thatch - Bernadette Hawthorn - 08-20-2025 “OH FOR THE LOVE OF CHERRY BLOSSOMS! That was NOT the one.” Snatching it out of their hand, Bernie packaged the wand up gingerly, folding the gauze ribbon over the wand as if it were a sleeping baby. The box was carefully placed on the back counter under a sign that read “NOPE!” Those would be cleaned and checked for damage before returning to the shelf. “Ok, let me think, let me think. Hmm..” Turning abruptly, Bernie went to stare at the poor young soul in her shop. Arms crossed, fingers tapping thoughtfully on her chin. After a couple rotations around the student, she stopped and closed one eye… Then the other. “Did you know there are no muscles in your fingers? No? Shocking! Well… you do now. Ok, I think I have an option.” Skipping up a ladder and over a short walkway Bernie grabbed without even looking and popped down the ladder, coming to stop behind the counter. “Ok, lets see if this one does SOMETHING! One can only hope.” Cypress wood, Hippogriff Feather Core, 11in, Sturdy Cypress: The possessors of cypress wands are rarely called upon to lay down their lives, though doubtless many of them would do so if required. Wands of cypress find their soul mates among the brave, the bold and the self-sacrificing: those who are unafraid to confront the shadows in their own and others’ natures. Hippogriff Feathere: Hippogriffs are noble animals with a reputation for not taking a slight. These wands require constant respect, and if the wielder does not give it, they can watch its formerly stable and versatile magic backfire on it. It is not the strongest core, but it is one of the most adaptable. These wands are most common amongst Gryffindors, but they are rare overall. Sturdy < slightly less common, harder to learn and cast, slightly more power Again, if you want this one great, or a portion or a fully new one. YOUR CHOICE! One more option available! RE: Lindsay Thatch - Lindsay Thatch - 08-20-2025 Lindsay giggled again at the sight of Bernie tucking the last wand away under the bold “NOPE!” sign. “Bet you’ve got a whole collection back there,” she teased, though there was a nervous edge to her laugh this time. She took the new wand eagerly, feeling the sturdiness of the wood as it settled into her hand. This time, when she gave it a flick, sparks leapt from the tip—bright little pops that fizzled in the air. Her eyes lit up, and she gave it another swish, the warmth traveling up her arm. “Alright, now that’s something!” she said with a grin. “It feels strong—like it could really do some proper cool stuff. The wood’s got this steady, solid feel to it too.” She twirled it again, almost hopefully. But then her smile faltered. The sparks had faded quickly, leaving only silence and the heavy weight of her expectation. Lindsay frowned, chewing her lip before speaking again. “Still… it doesn’t feel right. Like it’s close, but it’s not mine. It’s like the broom has the handle, but the bristles are missing, you know?” She glanced down at the wand, then back up at Bernie, her grin a little weaker this time whispring to herself. “What if it’s not the wands, though? What if it’s me? Like… something in me’s making them not want me.” The words slipped out a bit louder than she meant, her usual bravado cracked just a little. She placed the wand carefully back on the counter, her hands lingering before she pulled them away. OOC: In case it wasn't clear in the RP. I really like the sturdiness factor and the wood choice. Having a blast with the RP. Can't wait to see what you have next for her. RE: Lindsay Thatch - Bernadette Hawthorn - 08-20-2025 “SWEET BABY CLYDE, that was NOT IT.” Taking the wand in hand, Bernie once again put it away with care, then placed it in the NOPE! Pile to be dealt with later. Leaning on the counter, she looked at the student closely. Studying everything from their hair color, eye color, freckles or glasses. It all went into finding the right wand. “You know…” she said thoughtfully. “There is this one, but I wouldn’t have thought…” trailing off her sentence. This was a fascinating case. One that was more puzzling than she would like to admit. Walking into the back room with no more words spoken, you could hear her rummaging around in the stacks looking for something. It took considerably more time for this round, one might even think she had given up and walked away, but then she came out of the back. There were two wand boxes in her hands. She took one and looked at it carefully, then the other. Then back to the first. Ultimately, the wand box in her left hand was put on the counter, while the one in her right was added to the nope pile. “Ok, I think this may be the one. It’s a bit more… shall we say… unexpected, but, let's see if it’s the one.” Handing it over, Bernie looked both excited and terrified to see what would happen next. Dogwood Wand, Snallygasters Heartstring, 11in, Sturdy Dogwood: Dogwood wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy. Snallygasters heartstring: Owners of wands with this core should have a firm hand to temper the wands' fickle nature. This wand’s preferred owners are driven, ambitious and often focused on uncovering hidden truths. With unbreakable resolve and a deep curiosity, these wizards are natural born investigators, almost unstoppable in their pursuit of truth. This core suffers no fools, and refuses to work for individuals it sees as dim, lazy or lacking in sufficient drive. Wizards it chooses are often wise and animated, but if something doesn’t effectively capture their attention they will grow bored quickly and become restless, wishing to be anywhere else but where they are. Sturdy < slightly less common, harder to learn and cast, slightly more power AND HERE YOU GO!! This is your last Bernie option. If you don't like it and want to go to another shop to find your wand (think up your own mix) that is totally fine! She will only cry a little. RE: Lindsay Thatch - Lindsay Thatch - 08-21-2025 Lindsay watched Bernie disappear into the back, bouncing a little on her toes, chewing at her lip as doubt whispered in the back of her mind. When the shopkeeper finally returned, clutching two boxes, Lindsay’s eyes followed every motion with quiet anticipation. She took the chosen box with both hands, her heart pounding, and when the wand was revealed, something in her chest gave a little jolt. Even before her fingers closed around it, she knew. The second her palm wrapped around the wood, the air seemed to hum. A rush of warmth surged up her arm and spread through her body like sunlight on a cold morning. She gasped and gave the wand the smallest flick... The room exploded with magic. Golden sparks showered around her in brilliant arcs, lifting motes of dust into dazzling constellations. Lindsay’s feet left the ground, her body rising a few inches into the air, her hair floating as though she were underwater. Books rattled on the shelves, the sign for Wand Polish Discounts spun in a lazy circle, and the curtains at the window fluttered as if caught in a sudden breeze. She laughed, a bright, incredulous laugh, as she slowly drifted back down, boots touching the wooden floor with a soft thump. Her cheeks were flushed, her grin so wide it nearly hurt. “I—Merlin’s beard!” she stammered, clutching the wand tighter. “It feels… like it was waiting for me. Like it’s part of me. I can’t even explain it—it’s just right.” She looked down at it in wonder, turning it over in her hands as though afraid to blink and lose it. For a long moment she just stood there, caught between laughter and tears, before blurting out with a giggle, “Thank you so much!!! I guess this wand didn’t get the memo to say NOPE.” she said with a smile as she paid for the wand and happily made her way back out of the shop, ready to see what adventures awaited her and her new appendage! RE: Lindsay Thatch - Bernadette Hawthorn - 08-21-2025 “OH GOOD FUN! We have a winner!” Bernie sings, dancing a jig behind the counter. “That is fantastic! And you didn't even destroy my shop. Thanks for that, I appreciate the restraint.” Flitting around behind the counter, mumbling to herself while pulling a few things out here and there. “Ok, ARE YOU LISTENING?!” Green eyes wide, red hair fluffed out with her excursion. “I hope you are…” She said slowly, looking at the student carefully. “Here are the things you will need. FIRST!” She said with a flourish, “is your wand holster. You may strap it to your leg, or arm, sew it into clothing or use a pocket on the inside of your robes. DO NOT EVER! Put it in your back pocket. No No No. That's how little Tommy blew off a butt cheek. Yes he did. Big tadoo.” She trailed off, shaking her head at the poor unfortunate state of little Tommy. “NEXT! Here is a jar of polish and a rag. Keep. Your. Wand. CLEAN! Do not make me say it again. It is important. And don’t even get me started on using it to pick your nose or itch your ear.” Wide green eyes met those of the student, her hands went up over her head, miming an explosion, “Boom!” “AND THIRD! Wait… What's the third thing… umm, OH YES! Silly me. Have fun dear. Be good at Hogwarts, eat your veggies and stay away from the East Wing, I hear it’s haunted.” She gave them a knowing smile and walked away. As her back turned to the student, a small green leggy creature could be seen hanging on to her hat. Little Clyde, watching over his favorite human. |
